Mark Bailey 🏆
What do you love most about the job?
The Engineius platform allows me to be in control of my schedule which I love, along with meeting new customers but also regular bookers who I have built up great relationships with since 2019.
Also, visiting new locations that I probably would never have visited unless I was doing this job is also a lovely perk, along with all the different vehicles we get to drive.
How do you ensure you deliver vehicles on time?
Obviously planning is key here, although even with the best planning things can go wrong. But having a great team around you at HQ is reassuring when you do have a problem.
I also think that if you are going to be late, just being able to talk to the customers and explain is really appreciated by them, I have found that they are sympathetic and more than happy to work with you if you do encounter problems out of your control.
What has been your best experience with Engineius so far?
Watching how Chris and Mark have taken a Start-up in 2018 to what it is now has been incredible to experience and be a small part of, I've met some great fellow drivers and I feel like we are a team when out on the road and willing to help each other.
I'm noticing more competition these days than in 2018, so keeping the customers happy is key to the future of the Engineius platform.
How many miles do you drive on average a week?
Around 500+ miles.
What do you think are the secrets behind getting to where you’ve got to?
To not avoid parts of the job that you think will be a hassle or unenjoyable, I've found they can turn out to be the opposite. Like a few drivers, I was worried about EV tasks at first and tended to avoid them, but I now quite enjoy them and have made it work for me.
The infrastructure is getting better slowly, we get paid for the charging time and get a well earned break whilst charging the vehicle to recharge ourselves as well!
What drives you to succeed in this job?
My intentions are always to do the best job I possibly can not only for myself, but for Engineius too! I'm guilty of probably taking on too much at times and what looks simple on a map tends to not work out that way.
It's a constant learning curve and I want to succeed in improving my efficiency this year, but with the cost of living crisis it can be a difficult balance to achieve at times.
Do you reconcile your jobs and expenses on a regular basis?
Yes, I'm an old fashioned pen & paper man in this respect. I fill out a diary each day to keep on top of things, set aside funds for Income Tax and Class 4 National Insurance.
I also have a SIPP pension that I pay into monthly which I think is really important for any younger drivers out there who are doing this full-time.
What are you most excited for this year?
When I first started most of my work was fleet, but there's a lot more car lease work now which at first I found hard to adjust to but again by preserving with it and not avoiding it, I've found it to be a nice change from the fleet work.
Although sometimes finding a car wash in the middle of nowhere can be challenging!
What makes Engineius a special place to work?
The platform is unique, the app is the best in the business thanks to tireless improvements from the Tech team since 2018. Ops are fantastic at what they do, the whole team at Engineius make it the best vehicle movement company out there to work with.
What is the best advice you can give other drivers?
The obvious really - safety/planning/communication/expect the unexpected.
But my best advice would be to invest into a pension if you can as it's easy to put it off, you get 20% relief from the government as a top up so for every £100 you put in £20 gets added by them. Take advantage of offers/discounts with different apps, I'm currently getting 10% credit back from Uber on every train booking (Uber One) so it's worth taking advantage especially if you don't qualify for Railcards.
