Driver Of The Month: September 2021

We’re delighted to announce Alan Lythe as our September Driver of the Month - well done Alan!

Alan has not only been an exceptionally hard worker for Engineius on a frequent basis throughout the month, but he has also been a fantastic communicator with the Operations team throughout.

There have been many examples where Alan has been a team player, including taking on difficult jobs with little to no stress at all!

We spoke with Alan earlier this week to find out a little bit more about him. And remember, if you become our Driver of the Month for October, you’ll too receive a brand new high-vis Engineius-branded jacket as a thank you from the entire team.

What do you love most about the job?

I like the fact that I'm self-employed and can pick and choose when and where I work, of course, sometimes with a little nudge from the Operations team. I've seen parts of the UK I've never seen before and I have also driven some very nice vehicles in doing this. I've always said that this job is a bit like a box of chocolates, you just don't know what's coming next!

How do you ensure you deliver vehicles on time?

I ensure this by carefully planning my journey prior to the move, especially if it's an electric vehicle, then calculating if a charge en-route will be required, and planning these stops into my route. Of course, at present, I think I prefer electric to petrol/diesel with all these shortages!

What has been your best experience with Engineius so far?

There have been a few. I enjoy the long drives into the Scottish Highlands whilst admiring the views, only when I stop for a break, of course. The same applies to Wales, but we stay there for a good part of the year so it's like a second home to me.

How many miles do you do on average a week?

I would say 700 miles is a good benchmark.

What do you think are the secrets behind getting to where you’ve got to?

I took early retirement at 60, then we were expecting to spend most of our time abroad as we did for a couple of years previously. However, when the pandemic came along, I started to do voluntary work until Engineius gave me a good reason to get out and about and earn some money. So it helps knowing there is no pressure to work and a lot of what I do is for the experience, meaning I can be quite selective in what I do.

What drives you to succeed in this job?

Good question! I hope I am doing a good job and that people seem to appreciate that. Having this in mind is what drives me every day to do better and be better at what I do.

Do you reconcile your jobs and expenses on a regular basis?

I reconcile my jobs on a weekly basis once I receive my invoice. It’s not a hard task for me!

What are you most excited for this year?

Now that the world is slowly opening up, I think my holidays abroad seem to be the most exciting thing this year. On top of that, I have a little more beer money, so that’s always a plus!

What makes Engineius a special place to work?

I find Engineius special because I am my own boss. I can pick and choose when I work and in addition to all of that, I get to drive some nice cars and vans around beautiful places!

What is the best advice you can give other drivers?

Firstly, plan your route well in advance, as well as your fuel and charging stops. One of the most important things to remember is to take a break - never drive when you are feeling tired.

By winning Driver of the Month, you not only have the opportunity to feature on the company website, but you will also receive a brand new high-vis Engineius-branded jacket as a thank you from the Engineius team for all your hard work! Could you be our October Driver of the Month?
