Driver Of The Month: December
Our Driver of the Month for December is none other than the brilliant Martin Parsons, who has continued to be an excellent driver and team player throughout his time with Engineius. Our Ops Team agrees that Martin brings a level of enthusiasm that, on occasions, is unmatched.
As always, we got in contact with our winner to discuss his motivation and drive to succeed with Engineius.
What do you love most about the job?
The joy of knowing that every day is going to be different, from the scenery, types of vehicles, and challenges that customers throw at us. For me, the flexibility of the job and being able to choose where I go and what I drive are very important to me. Also, as a business owner, it’s great to know that I can take time out when needed. I also enjoy the banter with other drivers, customers, and the Ops Team!
How do you ensure you deliver vehicles on time?
Pre-planning is everything! I tend to overestimate time taken on jobs, and this leaves me under less pressure when things do not go to plan.
What has been your best experience with Engineius so far?
Delivering a Mercedes Unimog. I could see the reflection of the steam pouring from the smokestacks, roaring down the motorway at 40 mph with the steering wheel trying to shake itself out of my hands! En-route, two people asked me if I was a competitor in the Paris Dakar Rally, despite the fact that I was in Kent!! That was a day to remember. Also, the first time I moved the National Grids crane truck. I looked at it, gulped, and thought: ‘that's a bit on the big side’… It's now a regular job for me.
How many miles do you do on average a week?
I never have an average week, so I never add up the mileage! I simply take each job, one at a time.
What do you think are the secrets behind getting to where you’ve got to?
My extremely good looks, sparkling personality, modesty, and ability to earn enough money to bribe the Driver of the Month judges! No, seriously, I am confident that I can handle anything thrown at me, and having a good sense of humor. A few driving skills also come in handy.
What drives you to succeed in this job?
The knowledge and satisfaction of a job well done! I am also appreciative of comments from customers.
Do you reconcile your jobs and expenses on a regular basis?
I keep written records of job details in a diary. This is transferred into my computerised accounts every other day, ready for when they need to be passed to the wonderful tax authorities.
What are you most excited for this year?
I’m hoping that this year, we may get some continental jobs. It would be nice for a little jaunt to or from foreign locations. I am also hoping to resurrect my motor racing activities, as the unfortunate events of 2020 prevented this. It would also be very nice to meet and make friends with other drivers during our travels around the country. And I can’t forget the 2021 Engineius Christmas party!
What makes Engineius a special place to work?
The flexibility of the work and also the staff in Birmingham. You need a sense of humour in this job and it’s always nice to hear a happy voice at the end of the phone.
What is the best advice you can give other drivers?
Planning, planning, and more planning! Don't be greedy and try to do too much, as it only results in undue pressure that can lead to mistakes. Do not be afraid to refuse jobs. Plenty of other drivers out there are willing to do a job that does not suit you. Also, learn the train fares system. I learned the hard way and lost money on my first ever job! Most importantly, ENJOY YOURSELF!
By winning Driver of the Month, you not only have the opportunity to feature on the company website, but you will also win £20 in One4all vouchers. Keep up the great work and who knows, you may be our January Driver of the Month!
